High-Speed Trains Access Connectivity Through RIS-Assisted FSO Communications

Free-space optic (FSO) is a promising solution to provide broadband Internet access for high-speed trains (HSTs). Besides, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) are considered as hardware technology improve the performance of optical wireless communication systems. In this paper, we propose RIS-assisted FSO system connectivity HTSs, an upgrade existing direct and relay-assisted setups. Our motivation mainly based on well-proven results indicating that system, with large enough number RIS elements, outperforms one thanks its programmable structure. We firstly compute statistical expressions channels under weak moderate-to-strong fading conditions. Then, network's average signal-to-noise ratio outage probability formulated assumed conditions, two fixed- dynamic-oriented coverage scenarios. reveal proposed network offers up around 63% higher data rates 446% wider area each base station (FSO-BS) compared those one. The increase reduces 98% required FSO-BSs given distance, which in fewer handover processes alternative Finally, verified through Monte-Carlo simulations.
